ima be real, i felt this at one point (and i guess i sorta do too) but in all honesty the reason why being on the internet so much stressed me out was because people made it out to be something "not normal" in the first place. there's a lot of downsides to excessive internet usage but i kinda stopped trying to "fix" it (i.e use the internet less or do all that anti brain detox bullshit that's been on the rise) and just find better ways to spend my time on the internet that isnt a liability. i'm still working on that, but if you genuinely feel happy or comfortable more on the internet than the real world... why is that exactly a bad thing and why are you concerned specifically? I think it's worth looking at it in that perspective.

Today I went to my university's college of art market and bought a $25 bowl and $50 mug. I feel kinda bad even though I never spend money and all of it was already in my Venmo so it's basically not real. It's a really cool mug. I'm gonna drink hot chocolate out of it.

hell yeah!!! it's okay to splurge on nice things, especially if it's a unique or handcrafted thing. even better when it's a usable item like these rather than just decor, I'm sure you made an artist very happy, and this can be your special mug and bowl forever. drink some awesomesauce hot chocolate from it

i used to like social media for different forms of content and now it feels like every app is the fucking same. my youtube app moved my subscription tab to a small button hidden on the first tab?? like hello this is why i’m here, but they push shorts, instagram pushes reels, everything has stupid ai bots, and i hate the UI, i hate everything about everything i don’t even want to use it anymore bc its so lifeless and souless. its so ugly. the internet used to be so creative on a larger scale, now u can only find little unique blogs if you really search for them

indieweb enthusiasts do really try to help in this regard, but this is the main problem

you have to really search for all that

definitely +1 if both handmade and useable. i myself have procured a little collection of mostly-artisan bowls and such from various places, and a couple of them i've started using more as of recent, one of them is very nice as a teacandle holder and another as a dip jar...

I've been told in two different jobs where I have to work hard that I'm too nice. First as a teacher, and now as a financial advisor. I really want future clients to have the time to get to know me enough to see that I genuinely want to help them and would do my damnedest to help them succeed. I don't get that time to show people this. New advisors often have to do quick outreach (calls, DMs on LinkedIn, etc.), which often makes people weary, which is understandable.

I just want to work hard, actually help people, and make enough to afford a home where I can sustain having 8+ kids and lots of books in the future. I don't want to be cutthroat, manipulative, or even a billionaire like some of my coworkers do. I don't ever want to misrepresent anything to a client in the hopes of making more money. I actually want to help them increase what they have and charge a cheaper amount than competitors while still being paid for my work.

I don't know what to do. New advisors don't just get handed clients on a silver platter. We have to try and get them ourselves. I want them to see my real intentions, but I am not given time for that and the short amount of communication makes it seem like I'm trying to sell them something like a salesperson when I'm not (beyond my commission when they're charged a refundable flat fee after everything is finished).

Are people with good intentions just doomed nowadays when compared to manipulative assholes?

sometimes i wonder if it's possible to have the information diet equivalent of disordered eating. to be so focused on screen time metrics and eliminating digital distraction that it the avoidance itself becomes a problem / mental spiral.
